We follow a machine gun unit, as they move through Finland, regain the lost territory from the Winter War and then move into Soviet territory before being repulsed and retreating back into Finland. Linna is interested in men rather than Man, and the reader sees how one is strengthended, another twisted, and others die.

The Finnish soldier is, in his eyes, the bravest soldier in the world. As we watch beloved characters die without cause, and the survivors become increasingly traumatized, we realize intimately the idiocy of fighting for a small strip of land. Illegal stills, illegal absences, downright refusal to obey officers – all are not only part of the daily life of the Finnish soldier, they are, in Linna’s eyes, essential to survival and for being what makes a Finnish soldier.

Those that give orders are mocked, criticised and, ultimately, killed (by the Russians and by the author).

But it is the men that he is most attached to. «Kjente og ukjente soldater : om soldatholdninger og adferd i litteraturen og i virkeligheten med utgangspunkt i 'Ukjent soldat'». He does not shirk the difficult issues – cowardice, brutality towards the enemy, looting.

This progress of his novel which takes them from early triumphs to final defeat demonstrates the kind of men they were. Der Rokka er brutal, er Hietanen mer av en tenker og filosof.

Korporal Yrjö Lahtinen er kommunist og skeptisk til å føre krig mot sine kamerater i Sovjetunionen. He is relatively unsentimental about the war. Dette er i liten grad ivaretatt i oversettelsene.

Det samme gjelder lottene. Noen av redigeringene var nok også litterært motivert, ved at lange monologer ble beskåret.

Ukjent soldat er filmatisert tre ganger: i 1955 av Edvin Laine, i 1985 av Rauni Mollberg, og sist i 2017 av Aku Louhimies, til Finlands 100-årsjubileum.
